SWEET SCENTS TO SAVOR

This still life watercolor painting depicts an inviting sunny window after a rainfall. Feminine ribbons and lace tablecloth enhance the theme of preservation suggested by the dried flowers, pot pourri in mason canning jars and home-made scented oil. Lingering droplets of water on the window panes assemble and trickle down, gathering momentum as more droplets join the stream. Upon reflection, this is not at all a "still" life.

When composing an action painting or portrait, I usually work from a number of different photos, combining elements that I like from each to create the composition that I'm looking for - the action from one photo, the facial expression from another, the lighting effect from a third, etc. Using today's technology makes planning a layout of a composition fun. I try different arrangements and combinations until I reach a desired effect and I catch myself smiling.

My love for action and fascination with capturing a flash of movement in this motionless art form should be evident in my sports paintings. Only the experience itself can compare with the thrill I feel when I have captured an athlete in the excitement of the moment, a skier in anticipation of the next mogul, heli or gate, a figure skater in the midst of performing the best quad ever, a snow boarder out-maneuvering three formidable opponents in a snowboard cross race. Every athlete, professional or amateur, can identify with the adrenaline rush felt in that instant portrayed in my painting. This work for me is exhilarating, unrestricted, satisfying.

Composing A Sports Action Painting

COMPOSING A SPORTS ACTION PAINTING

Step 1:

When composing a sports action painting, I usually work from a number of photos of the same action from different angles and under different lighting conditions. Very seldom, is just one photo perfect enough to be the sole model for the painting. I usually combine my favorite elements from different photos to create the effect that I'm looking for - the expression on the athlete's face from one photo, the muscle action from another, the lighting from a third. My planning stage often takes as long as completing the entire painting. Photoshop sometimes comes in very handy for this process where I can combine photographic elements easily to see if I like the effect. When I am satisfied with this preliminary layout, I go on to the next phase.

Winter Color is a colorful winter landscape watercolor painting featuring a century barn overlooking a snowy valley. A crisp winter sunset behind a winter-weary back-country barn was the basis for this vibrant image. COUNTRY CHARM is a still life painting of a rickety old hand-operated water pump, typically found on back country roads in Southern Ontario's farmland. This one has been overgrown with Shasta daisies and Day Lilies that flourish in Ontario country meadows. Rusted watering cans and broken clay pots complete the scene. Although this is essentially a still life painting, summer breezes echo in the flow of the painting and movement of the plants and wire fencing.
